Biography
Dr JooYeoul (JY) Ryu is a Lecturer in Korean Studies at Monash University. His academic work spans language, psychology, performance, and aesthetics, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and practice-based approaches.
JY also has extensive clinical experience working as a psychotherapist using psychodrama and psychoanalysis. He has a particular interest in migrant mental health and wellbeing, learning difficulties and neurodevelopmental conditions.
Prior to his academic and clinical career in Korea, India, and Australia, JY gained broad professional experience in the media and entertainment industries. He worked as a producing director and later as an overseas marketing executive at MBC, Korea’s national television and radio broadcaster.
JY's main area of research expertise are language and cognition, language learner differences, affect in foreign language learning, and Asian theatre and drama. His current research projects include the role of cognition in multilingualism and neurodevelopmental conditions.
