Abstract

Imagination belongs at the heart of the discourse on aesthetic autonomy. In the aesthetic education of man, Schiller attributes „absolute legislation“ to the imagination. My contribution follows the trail of conflicting debates on the understanding of the imagination from 1500–1800. Exploring works by Ficino, Paracelsus, Cardano, Fienus, Burton, Helmont, Malebranche, Nikolai, et al. it will have an especial focus on the more neglected perspective of the pathological imagination.
