Abstract
Zebrafish are a critical laboratory model for investigating muscle development, regeneration, physiology, disorders, and evolution. Here, we provide a summary of zebrafish muscle anatomy, including origin, insertion, function, and innervation. We organize these descriptions using both topological and embryological criterion. Head muscle groups include the extraocular muscles, arch associated muscles, and the hypobranchials. Postcranial muscles include the metamerically arranged trunk myomeres, as well as the muscles of the paired (i.e., pectoral and pelvic) and unpaired (i.e., dorsal, anal, and caudal) fins. In addition to anatomical descriptions, we provide a brief commentary on several insights into zebrafish myology from the studies of development.
