Abstract

Two dicopper(II) complexes, [Cu2(tae)(tmed)2]X2, where tae = 1,1,2,2-tetra-acetylethanediide, tmed = tetramethylethylenediamine and X = NO-3, BPh-4, were synthesized. The X-ray crystal structure of the nitrate salt was determined. The two square planar basal planes containing the copper ions make a dihedral angle of 84.6° with each other. The nitrate ion is coordinated to each of the copper ions at the apex of a square pyramid. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on the two complexes gave J values of - 17.6 (NO-3) and -8.7 (BPh-4) cm-1. The ESR and visible spectra of the tetraphenylborate salt are dependent on the solvent basicity.
