Abstract
Women with mental illness have special needs for diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management. Women with schizophrenia are often older at illness onset, have different rehabilitation needs and may have different medication response to male patients. Sex differences also exist in the expression of depression and anxiety disorders. The aetiology of gender differences in the presentation and outcome of mental illness comprises complex interactions between biological, psychological and social factors.
