N2 - The field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been producing innovation by expanding the application of sensor systems and networks towards new directions. At the same time, the need for efficient management is challenging administration practices since the field of system management has been slower to adapt. The diversity and specialization of WSNs make it very difficult for standard solutions or established management practices to be applied. Very few integrated management systems can support large, productive industrial WSN installations and infrastructures, in addition to systems. OpenRSM is an open-source system designed for general-purpose system management and remote control, capable of creating complex and scalable infrastructure management scenarios by orchestrating the execution of autonomous tasks. This chapter discusses the challenges in the field of WSNs and describes how open-source platforms like OpenRSM can be extended to manage WSNs that rely on the TinyOS system.
