Abstract
This papers examines questions relating to the processes and structures associated with strategic mine planning: who is involved in, or influential in the design of mines? (who plans mines?); and are formal systems and processes in use? the results of a small survey are presented and discussed. The authors argue for a high level of interaction and involvement of a broad range of skill sets in the strategic mine planning process. There is evidence of the industry responding to this need with a team-based approach. The authors also argue for the use of formal processes in strategic mine planning, and found mixed evidence of the use of it in the domain.
