Abstract
This review describes Paul Ehrlich's great achievements and inventions. He won the Nobel Prize for his immunological research in 1908. However his complete lifetime achievements include also outstanding and groundbreaking findings in the fields of hematology, antineoplastic and antiinfective chemotherapy as well as synthetic and (bio)analytical chemistry. Within these subject areas Ehrlich introduced and described in detail various new methods and ways of research. Consequently he played a crucial role in the development of the receptor theory that is today the basis of pharmacology. After all Paul Ehrlich was a gifted man in many areas and a real "self-made man".
