Abstract

With increasing awareness and appreciation by the community of the conservation values of wetlands, there are currently steps being taken by government authorities to manage wetlands of high conservation values for their preservation. Changes to the hydrologic regime of wetlands is a vital factor affecting the natural diversity of wetlands and thus the water management for wetlands will feature prominently in the next decade as engineers continue to develop the nation's water resources to meet future demands. This paper describes a process in developing a water management strategy for wetlands and discusses the many ecological, social and hydrological issues that need to be considered in developing such a strategy. The paper concludes by asserting the need to involve the combined efforts of ecologist, biologist and the hydrology/hydraulics engineer in the process.
