The experience of the countries of the former Soviet bloc has shown that the transition from centralised planning to a market economy is a difficult and time-consuming process. It includes a gradual introduction of elements of the market mechanism while vestiges of the old economic system continue to function. The economy of the transitional period thus has properties of both systems, and no individual theory can fully explain the results of such a mixed situation.
