Abstract
This is a review paper which traces the origins of our understanding of the behaviour of shear layers separating from the leading edge of a bluff body and the key role played by turbulence, in particular the effect on the pressures developed under the reattaching shear layer. The importance of the leading edge phenomenon in a number of wind engineering applications has also been summarised.
