Abstract

Hazard 86 is focused on pharmaceutical opioid-related harm in Victoria. Opioid poisoning related admissions data were extracted from the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED), and relevant Emergency Department presentations were extracted from the Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD), for the period 2008/09-2017/18. Findings related to ten-year trends and three-year patterns in hospital admissions and Emergency Department attendances are presented to provide an overview of pharmaceutical opioid-related harm in Victoria, Australia. In addition, the Hazard provides insight into intentional self-harm vs. unintentional opioid poisoning, age and sex-specific trends in opioid poisoning, and harms by type of pharmaceutical poisoning.
