Translocal Indigenous communities: global indigeneity and networks of political activism

    Abstract

Globalisation has presented unique challenges for Indigenous peoples with regard to the maintenance of sovereignty in the face of direct and resource capitalism, global colonisation and environmental catastrophe. Indigenous peoples not only face the persistent threat from settler–colonial nation-states, they now face the added intrusion from multinational corporations as capitalist interests sweep the globe. Today, we are considering less the benefits of industrialisation (global travel, communication technology, resource production) and more the potential destruction caused by advances in technology (pollution, nuclear disaster, climate change).
