Abstract

2 billion people worldwide have inadequate or no access to life-saving essential medicines. After the presence of trained health professionals, medicines are the single most crucial element in maintenance of health and treatment of disease. Any attempt to strengthen health systems and thereby improve access to and use of medicines will be undermined without tackling the current underlying pharmacy workforce issues.
