Abstract

The conduct of analytical testing for drugs and poisons in specimens obtained from living subjects or persons admitted to hospital provides valuable information to a forensic investigation. Exogenous substances may affect a range of behaviors, adverse health outcomes or they may even cause toxicity. A range of specimens may be taken, particularly blood, hair, and urine. Techniques used include immunoassay screening for classes of drugs and various chromatographic techniques. Mass spectrometry provides the ultimate identification and confirmation of any preliminary test.
