The philosophy of total quality management (TQM) has been instrumental in improving the quality of products and services of provides by several major companies in Australia. After a brief outline of the six steps which form the basis of most TQM initiatives, the paper describes how five leading organisations implemented TQM, and suggests the direction which future developments may take. The recently-established Total Quality Management Institute has the aim of encouraging the dissemination of TQM principles and practices throughout Australia.
