Abstract
This single-authored book examines Japan's renewed relationship to other parts of Asia in the context of the rise of media cultural flows and connections in East and Southeast Asia since mid 1990s. Through the analysis of the discourse of Japan's "return to Asia" and cultural excellence in the region and the ethnographic work of the production and consumption of media culture in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, the book elucidates how cultural globalization processes have generated diverse, contradictory facets of historically constituted Japan's desire for "Asia".
