Abstract

In this essay, we explore the exciting possibilities that autoethnographic futuring generates for co-design. We share our experience designing and participating in the Tomorrow Party, a participatory, futures-focused form of autoethnographic co-design practice. The Party draws on first-person experiential knowledges to build the imaginative and relational capacities needed to co-create tomorrow stories–collective visions for desired futures. We describe ‘practice stories’, a method for materialising co-design autoethnography by staying with and in specific moments of practice. We share individual practice stories that generate collective reflections on how the Party helps develop imaginative, relational and agential co-design. Finally, we consider what bringing together first-person futuring practices and design autoethnography research and representation offers to co-design more broadly.
