Three-dimensional investigation of the microtexture near tensile crack tip in Ti-6Al-4V

Abstract

Microtexture regions are normally found in Ti-6Al-4V with bi-modal microstructure and are believed to have significant effect on crack growth morphology. In the present study, the microtextured regions of about 30 μm wide contains elongated grains with c-axis parallel to transverse direction. The crack tip from an interrupted tensile test was examined using three-dimensional electron backscattered diffraction (3D-EBSD) assisted with an ion beam. It has been found that the crack path was along the boundaries of randomly orientated grains or along the retained β phase. The transverse orientation was found to promote the faceted crack growth.
