Abstract

Whilst composite materials are now widely used in aircraft structural components, for certification purposes current designs are such that any delamination will not grow. Despite this limit, fleet data and data obtained from full scale fatigue tests reveal that small sub mm initial delaminations can grow when subjected to operational flight loads. A possible alternative approach to certification was introduced by the FAA in 2011. This allows for a slow growth approach to the certification of composites and bonded structures. In this context recent studies have revealed that delamination growth in composites and disbond growth in adhesive bonds can be computed using a version of the NASGRO crack growth equation. This paper reveals the potential for this approach to capture the large scatter seen in fatigue tests associated with both delamination/disbond growth in both composite structures and adhesively bonded joints.

OtherThe Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society is co-hosting the 16th Australian International Aerospace Congress (AIAC16), 24-26 February 2015. Australia’s premier aerospace forum will take place at the Melbourne Convention Centre, with two half day meetings on site at the Avalon Airshow.

AIAC16 will facilitate three technical conferences:

16th Australian Aeronautical Conference
8th DSTO International Conference on Health and Usage Monitoring (HUMS 2013)
2nd International Conference on Near Net Shape Manufacturing.
The AIAC16 will be re-convening on-site at the Airshow on the mornings only of Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 February 2015.
