Thermomechanical processing of an Al-Mg-Si alloy

Abstract

A medium-strength, heat-treatable alloy (AA6063) was subjected to thermomechanical processing involving an overaging heat treatment of 6 hours at 400 degree C, immediately prior to cold or warm rolling, in order to promote a fine grain size during subsequent recrystallization at 300 degree C. The grain size in the rolling plane was reduced to 10 mu m. This led to enhanced plasticity in tensile tests at 20 degree C and in tests conducted at low strain rates at 450 degree C (elongations of 148%). However, the alloy did not exhibit superplasticity at 500 degree C because grain growth occurred.
