The sustainability of RMG as a globally competitive industry: Porter Diamond perspective

Abstract

This paper reviews literature as well as explores analytical findings on the theory of national competitive advantage to define the trend and pattern of international trade from an emerging market perspective. For this purpose, RMG sector of Bangladesh is taken as an example industry, as its microeconomic foundation of competitiveness is evident from political economic standpoint. The post MFA period has been analyzed because the beneficiaries of MFA, including Bangladesh will face severe competition in the unprotected world market. The challenges in front of these RMG industries are to remain competitive in the level playing field. Based on driver industry ideology, this paper strongly recommends that sources of RMG industry success determine the pattern of international trade for Bangladesh.
