Successful implementation of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT) depends on the crucial role of a technology champion. Literature clearly indicates that without a technology champion, organizations have found their investment in AMT dissipated and their expectations dashed. In this article, we examine three Australian organizations in which the manufacturing engineer played a crucial role in the selection and implementation of the technology. The activities that the manufacturing engineer had to undertake in the acquistion of new technology in each company are outlined in the form of case studies. The article concludes with some recommendations that may help engineers become effective technology champions.
