Abstract
While bike riding has the potential to substantially improve physical and mental health, and reduce emissions, participation is low. This PhD used a mixed-methods approach to measure interest in bike riding and identify barriers and enablers. While 3 in 4 Victorians were noted to be interested in riding a bike, people reported barriers related to riding a bike on the road and associated safety concerns. Potential riders experienced considerable barriers from infrastructure not designed for their needs. Provision of high-quality connected bike networks that meets the needs of people of all ages and abilities are critical to enhancing bicycling participation.
