Abstract
A three-dimensional instability theory is discussed. Climatological, instantaneous synoptic and idealised basic states are employed to illustrate various aspects of the theory. The results of a parameter study, in which the static stability parameter is changed, are presented for a Northern Hemisphere winter climatological basic state.-from Author
