The odyssey of Jin Ping Mei: A translational history of the 'No.1 Marvellous Book' in English

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleResearchpeer-review

Abstract

Being one of the best known classic Chinese novels, Jin Ping Mei also enjoys considerable international popularity. Although research on the novel is on the rise in recent years, its interlingual dissemination - English translations in particular, has never been brought to the fore. This paper, based on the author s field trips to the UK and the U.S., endeavours to tease out Jin Ping Mei s translational history in English in the light of the socio-cultural milieu which has framed its various translated texts. These translations, on the other hand, can be veritably taken as textual commemoration of the social context and literary climate in which they were born.
