Abstract
In his 2010 book, What Were They Thinking? James Walter examined the ideas, and the debates between ideas that have shaped Australia s political history. Island asked Walter to reflect on the years since the publication of his book, the ideas that have been at play, and the obstacles that have disallowed a politics of ideas from occurring.
