Abstract
The upstream-propagating guided-jet mode first identified by Tam and Hu [1] has recently been shown to underpin a large range of resonant processes in compressible jets. Despite increasing evidence of its broad importance, it remains relatively poorly understood. In this paper, we will provide an in-depth discussion of the properties of the guided-jet mode, demonstrating its sensitivity to Mach number, shear-layer thickness, temperature, and nozzle geometry. The intent of this paper is to act as a guide for researchers working in jet noise who do not have direct access to the codes necessary to calculate the properties of the guided-jet mode themselves.
