Abstract
Apart from the effect of gold discoveries on chemical
science in colonial Australia in the 1860s (see July
issue, pp. 18a??21; August issue, pp. 12a??16),a? this
decade saw a broadening of activity in analytical
chemistry, including an interest in spectrum analysis.
Two men in Colonial Australia were responsible for
three publications on spectrum analysis in the 1860s;
one of these men arrived here involuntarily. To place
this Australian story (Part 7) in perspective, some
historical background is necessary.
