Abstract

Our earliest resident chemists, those who arrived here in the 1840s and 1850s, published 24 papers in that period (Collins 2010). But chemical science really began to blossom in Australia in the 1860s; no fundamentally new chemistry was discovered, but the field of interest broadened. Including two stand-alone pamphlets, and five reports in the newspaper The Empire, there were 69 publications of a chemical nature by Australian workers in the arbitrarily chosen ten-year period 1860a??1869. Some of these papers are featured here.a?
