Abstract

Over the last two years, Norske Skog Paper Mills (Australia) Ltd has been conducting an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) for its effluent discharge into the upper Derwent eastuary, in southern Tasmania. The first stage of the ERA identified resin acids as a potential stressor due to the association between resin acids and their toxicity to fish. Following this, a comprehensive study of their emission and dispersion in the receiving environment was conducted. Microbial incubation studies were thus incorporated into the experimental program. Finally, the resulting data was analyzed in detail.
