The effect of electron beam irradiation on sulphur vulcanized EPDM/halloysite nanocomposites

The modification of tensile and morphological properties of sulphur vulcanized ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) nanocomposites filled by 0, 10, 30 and 100 phr (part per hundred rubber) of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by electron beam (EB) irradiation in the presence of crosslink promoter trimethylolpronane triacrylate (TMPTA) has been studied. The EB irradiation dosages of 0, 50, 100 and 150 kGy were applied to the EPDM/HNT nanocomposites after sulphur crosslinking. The tensile strength of EPDM/HNT nanocomposites at low (<30 phr) and high (100 phr) HNT loading increased and decreased, respectively while the elongation at break decreased after applying EB irradiation. FTIR analysis detected a breakdown in crystalline structure of the HNTs after EB irradiation but also an increase in H bonding with TMPTA addition. TEM analysis indicated an increased dispersion of HNTs in EPDM as a result of EB irradiation.
