N2 - The discovery and validation of sensitive and specific disease related biomarkers is essential for efficient disease detection and surveillance, and will form a key component of personalized medicine. While early progress in the biomarker field was slower than had been anticipated, the tide is now turning, and a number of key technologies, especially in the areas of micropurification, mass spectrometry, antibody production and validation, microarrays, biosensors and bioinformatics have recently been developed which are rapidly accelerating progress. In this review we will introduce these technologies and illustrate their potential with recent applications from the literature.
