Abstract
This is a short film documentary titled, "The Biola in the Riau Islands of Indonesia". It tells the history of the instrument first believed to have arrived in Indonesia 500 years ago on Portuguese ships of African slaves, and its central position in the current day Indonesian music, dance and theatre scene across the archipelago. The film is based on my ethnographic fieldwork and field footage of theatre performance in Indonesia. It has been selected to screen in Paris next April at the annual Ethnograph International Film Festival to be held on Montmartre at Cine 13 Theatre (http://www.cine13-theatre.com/). It was seen by a panel of judges and the director of the festival, Professor of Sociology and Director of Video Ethnography at the Louisiana State University, Wes Shrum; as the director of the film, I have been invited to attend in Paris personally. It will be seen by a community of 90-100 independent film directors from around the world, and the event will be expossed through the French media and the internet. I'm hoping to have it shown across Indonesia eventually, and have it aired on national television here in AUstralia and Indonesia.
The film is also a finalist in the Singapore International Film Festival and the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival, the winners for both are to be announced early in 2018.
