N2 - This special issue of Outlook on Agriculture contains articles that were first presented at a workshop held at the 11th European Symposium of the International Farming Systems Association (www.ifsa2014) in April 2014 in Berlin. The workshop focused on the role of `system innovations? in the transition towards sustainable agriculture. An `innovation? was understood by participants as something significantly different from `product innovation? and `change?. The particular focus in this special issue is on the role of innovation platforms (IPs), networks, brokers and institutional entrepreneurship in bringing about such transitions.
