Abstract
The reaction media typically constitute the largest part of the reaction mixture. In attempts to develop more sustainable methods for heterocyclic synthesis, bio-based reaction media are becoming a viable alternative replacing conventional fossil-derived organic solvents. A variety of bio-based media produced from renewable sources, often from biomass generated as waste by industries, allow the selection of a medium with specific properties satisfying reaction requirements. This chapter illustrates applications of several relatively more established bio-based media such as glycerol, lactic acid, ?-valerolactone, and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran and emerging bio-based solvents like Cyrene, limonene, eucalyptol, and p -cymene for the synthesis of heterocycles.
