Symbol synchronization using baudrate sampling and data-sequence-dependent signal processing

Abstract

A new algorithm for symbol timing recovery using baudrate sampling is presented. The decoded data sequence is scanned for particular data patterns which yield samples that need only be added or subtracted to give an estimate of the required timing function. The statistics of occurrence of these data patterns are calculated for random binary data. The variance of the timing function estimates is calculated for pulses with raised-cosine spectra which have been degraded by quadratic delay distortion, and is shown in most cases to be lower than for other synchronizers using baudrate sampling.
