Abstract

Leadership and education are similar in that they are both transformative processes that facilitate growth, foster collaborations and increase scientific knowledge, innovation and enterprise. Surgical academia poses increasingly greater challenges that are often outside the remit of regular professional training. Nevertheless, academy itself is a key modality of growth that informs the development of leaders and educators. This review highlights some key principles of effective surgical education and leadership and their relationship to academy.
