Abstract
After the types of suicidal behavior (completed, attempted, chronic, and focal) are defined, the epidemiology of suicide worldwide is described. Proposed causes for the societal suicide rate and suicide in individuals are reviewed. Tactics to prevent suicide are reviewed and the difficulties facing the significant others of suicide are discussed. Finally, the issues of whether suicide is immoral and irrational are debated.
