Abstract
In this article I explore the idea of strengthening agency in middle school students in regard to writing and building the skills and confidence of students so that they can be writers who do more than just meet outcomes and the requirements of assessment in the classroom. Writing in the middle school needs to be centred on agency and identity and creating a presence through writing. I offer a model for strengthening students’ writing practices, one that is designed to promote critical reflection about current practices.
