Abstract

The testes produce sperm by the process of spermatogenesis and also secrete testosterone, an androgenic or masculinising hormone. Spermatogenesis is controlled by the pituitary gland’s secretion of follicle stimulating hormone acting directly on the testis and luteinizing hormone which acts indirectly by its capacity to stimulate the testis to produce testosterone. Spermatogenesis takes 70 days from start to completion, a timeframe that is fixed and hence treatments for infertility require long term therapy
