Stress distributions of steady and unsteady state hopper flows

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical study of the stress distributions of the steady and unsteady state granular flowsin a cylindrical hopper with flat bottom by means of the combined approach of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and an averaging method. For both flows, the simulations were conducted under comparable conditions. Four independent components of the stress tensor for the three dimensional flows are investigated. The results show that the trends of the stresses of the two flows are similar, although there are some differences in magnitude. The magnitudes of the stresses decrease with time or number of particles except in the orifice region.
