Abstract
The stress field in rail head of high strength rail steel is investigated in this paper. The influence of the presence of real dynamic issues on the stress field in the rail head due to wheel/rail rolling contact is confirmed. The wheel/rail rolling contact problem is simulated by using the steady-state transport analysis technique. The influence of different rolling conditions on the stress-state in rail head is investigated based on the stress-based approach for fatigue analysis. The results obtained from this analysis will be used to design the experimental tests. However, this method cannot provide sufficient information for the study of rolling contact fatigue of the rail steel. An effective method which considers both elastic and plastic strain components and the effect of the stresses is proposed to further evaluate the stress-state in the rail head numerically in the future.
