Strain measurements and damage detection using piezo-electric film sensors

Abstract

An investigation of piezo-electric film (PVDF) as sensors for detecting fluctuating area-averaged strain was carried out by the Co-operative Research Centre-Aerospace Structures. This paper presents experimental results on the characterization of the sensors and its application in monitoring crack growth on a metallic specimen. The present results show that if the film is prepared and adhered properly, it is capable of providing accurate fluctuating strain measurements and can be used for monitoring crack growth on a metallic specimen.
