Abstract

For more than two decades there has been considerable and sustained growth in women’s and girls’ interest in surfing, both in terms of consumerism and participation. In surf schools, surf stores and surf media, the female presence has never been greater. Findings from Britain suggest that women account for more than half of those attending surf lessons (Barkham, 2006; Cossar, 2011), and it was estimated that around 20% of the surfing population are female (Barkham, 2006). This figure rises to a third in dominant surfing nations like Australia (Booth, 2001a).
