Abstract

Spatially resolved soot mass growth rates are measured in a range of laminar ethylene and ethane diffusion flames. The surface specific mass growth rates are correlated with local temperature and mixture fraction to obtain a simple functional relationship for each fuel. The flames are modelled using the soot growth function and an oxidation model. Good predictions of soot concentrations are obtained for most conditions. The smoke-point effect is predictable, but an improved oxidation model is needed.
