Some recent work on alloy and process development of Ti and TiAl-based alloys

Recent work on alloy and process development of Ti and TiAl-based alloys which has been carried out in the IRC is discussed. The work covers the development of a burn-resistant beta Ti alloy using ingot-route processing and some further developments involving both laser processing and hot isostatic pressing of atomised samples of this alloy. The important role that the addition of C plays in this alloy will be emphasised and preliminary observations of the influence of C addition to other Ti alloys will be described. The importance of cooling rate and subsequent heat treatments on the properties of selected TiAl-based alloys are also discussed where the aim has been to produce a cost-effective process route for components for aerospace applications.
