Abstract
Alfred Korzybski, in Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics, argued that language would be more effective if people used certain techniques from scientific methodology. To this end, he proposed the widespread use of a few simple devices, called extensional devices. Brooks and Brooks depart from strict Korzybskian perspective and explore further extensional devices that may be of use, which are most directly applicable to one's understanding of American English.
