Abstract
Research Background
Designed for people who have suffered heart attacks or have heart arrhythmia and experience the physical and emotional discomfort that accompanies electrocardiogram monitoring, Leah Heiss wanted to create an alternative. Heiss wanted to bring design knowledge and medical technology together to create a precious necklace with diagnostic capabilities.
Research Contribution
Smart Heart is a wearable cardiac monitor necklace with the capacity to collect, store and remotely transmit cardiac data collected over an extended period for analysis by medical professionals. Aiming to replace the bulky cardiac holter monitor (which connects to a 6-12 lead ECG) Smart Heart can be easily integrated into people's daily lives due to its non-invasive design. Its soft textile neckband integrates wiring, electrodes and jewel structures, which conceal the central processing unit and battery power. The aesthetic design is intentionally non-medical, and appears as precious jewellery, in the hopes of humanising and shifting stigma around wearable health technologies. The work was informed by interviews with aged care residents to understand the lived experience of using cardiac monitors.
Research Significance
• Exhibited in Belgium as part of Handle with Care at Reciprocity: Design Leige at the Triennale of Design and Social Innovation.
• Smart Heart was funded through Gandel Philanthropy’s Community build grant scheme
• Selected for various group exhibitions in Australia, including Humanise, Warrnambool Art Gallery; The Art and Consequence of Collaboration, SASA Gallery, Adelaide; Agency by Design - Expressive Design for Disability, Artisan Gallery,
Brisbane and Tuggeranong Arts Centre.
• Smart Heart has received significant press; it was featured in ABC TV's Design Shots - The Innovator, an ABC Splash micro-documentary; The Age and Sydney Morning Herald; and Austrade's Australia Unlimited magazine, distributed to
100,000 readers across Europe.
