Abstract
Risk assessment is required increasingly by legislation and standards not only for design of new large plant but also for evaluation of risks in normal plant operation and maintenance. Risk assessment, when done fully, can involve high costs and substantial data gathering exercises. This paper discusses the nature of these requirements and proposes a simplified approach to risk assessment that may provide an adequate indication of the issues involved and whether the risks are acceptable.
